Funding football in Benidorm

- By Irena Bodnarec

WELL-known high-street opticians, Specsavers are donating €1,000 to a local grassroots football programme to benefit young aspiring players. The Benidorm branch of the opticians, located on Calle Gambo are supporting an initiative of Benidorm football club, which encourages children to play sport, especially among underprivileged families. The sponsorship will cover all the fees and sports equipment for two children to play at the club throughout the season.

Store director, Jorge Martí´nez de Lizarduy, says the store was compelled to support such a worthy community initiative: “Our children are the future of Benidorm and we need to help them as much as we can in these difficult times. I believe all kids should have the opportunity to play sports, as it helps them to develop both physically and emotionally as well as providing a much-needed distraction from the difficulties they are suffering. The aim of our sponsorship is to take the financial pressure off two families who are struggling and enable these vulnerable children to do what they love the most this year”.

Specsavers Benidorm is donating 500€ per child to cover all their costs for the year.

Jorge continues: “In addition to the financial sponsorship, we’ve committed to check the eyes of all the children playing at the club. Good vision is crucial for the kids to perform at their highest level and play safely, so we will be working with the club to implement a testing programme for the children playing across all ages and levels.

Last but not least, we’ve offered all the members’ parents and close relatives a 30% discount on glasses at the store. We know how many families are struggling due to the lack of tourism which drives Benidorm’s economy. So, we wanted to do our bit to make things easier and make essential eye care more accessible”.

Benidorm FC’s president, José Santiago López, thanked Jorge and his team for their collaboration and support when he visited the store to officially sign the agreement.
