Cove access limit for drivers

Further covers added to the protection scheme

HIGH season numbers on some of the most popular coves along Jávea’s coastline will be strictly controlled this summer to ensure visitors’ safety.

Security measures were first put in place at La Granadella in 2017 aimed at limiting the number of cars able to access the bay for safety reasons. Last year this was extended to another cove, Barraca or Porticholl, and this year Cova Tallada and Cala Blanca will be added to the scheme. Jávea town hall is now putting a contract to run the service out to tender.

Worth more than €108,000, it also involves controlling numbers on the beaches to ensure social distancing under Covid-19 health regulations.

Controls were first embraced at ‘the cove under the most pressure’, La Granadella and have gradually been extended to include other popular beauty spots.

A council spokesman said: “Initially, it was established to promote a responsible and sustainable use of natural spaces and to avoid traffic gridlock which put safety in these places at risk in an emergency.

“Although the ongoing health crisis meant that last summer, the capacity control was also expanded to urban beaches.

“That is why the new contract also includes information tasks aimed at beach users, so they are aware of the conditions of use of these beaches and additional health safety measures including those linked to Covid-19.”

The controls will operate from July 1 until August 31, the main holiday season.

In addition, measures will also be in force over the weekends of June and September.

It means access will again be restricted to the coves of Granadella and Porticholl.

For the first time Cala Blanca is also included as it became crowded by visitors unable to access the other coves. The coves will also have numbers on the beach limited, as will the beaches of Arenal, the town’s main tourist area, and La Grava in the port.

The company will also be responsible for controlling numbers going to Cova Tallada in Montgó natural park, a cove only accessible on foot.
