Pines for the Mar Menor
SAN Pedro del Pinatar town hall and the local school community have joined forces for a pine tree planting project.
The scheme was developed to commemorate United Nations’ International Day of Forests, which took place on March 21, with the objective of raising awareness amongst schoolchildren about biodiversity and the fight against climate change.
The children have been tasked with planting a green area, which has been named ‘El Mar Menor de los niños’ (the children’s Mar Menor) that will continue to grow with the passing of time, due to the positive impact of previous environmental activities carried out alongside the school community.
The project recently started with pupils from Maspalomas primary school planting 60 pines.
Town hall technicians opted to plant Aleppo pine, a species native to the area, as well as being a form of pine that is caselves
pable of absorbing a larger amount of carbon dioxide (C02) than other trees in the same family.
The scheme has been developed through collaboration with La Asomada centre.
Project promoter Francisco Ruiz explained that La Asomada has shown children the necessity of preserving the Mar Menor, and they themhave proposed solutions and initiatives to improve it.
The San Pedro initiative is being promoted by the town hall departments for education, environment, and parks and gardens in collaboration with the company INAM, who have provided the saplings and assisted the children with their planting.
