A TOTAL of four million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been delivered to Spain this week.

Minister for health Carolina Darias said this increase in supply marked a ‘defining moment’ in the vaccination process of the country, which is home to 47 million people. Sra Darias said it was a ‘record week for the arrival of vaccines’, with two million delivered on Monday and a further two million due to come in yesterday (Thursday).

Breaking down the figures, she noted that 1.76 million were from Pfizer, 1.68 from AstraZeneca,

400,000 from Moderna and 126,000 from Janssen.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez explained that increases in deliveries will continue throughout May and June, ‘which will allow us to reach our vaccination goals’.

He stated that ‘thanks to the good progress in the inoculation programme two out of every three people in their 60s have now had at least one jab’.

He noted that this collective had been the most vulnerable during the pandemic, with 95% of deaths caused by Covid-19 in Spain occurring in this age bracket.

Prime Minister Sánchez was accompanied by Sra Darias on a visit to a Janssen investigation centre in Castilla-La Mancha region on Wednesday.

The managing director of Janssen España, Luis Diaz Rubio showed them around the installations and explained how the single dose vaccine was developed.

Sr Sánchez stated afterwards that Spain will receive 17.5 million doses of the

Janssen vaccine, which marks a big step in their bid to inoculate 70% of the population before the end of the summer.

He noted that 15 million doses of the four different vaccines available in the European Union had been administered already in Spain, with 11.2 million people having had at least one jab and 4.1 million being completely vaccinated.
