Bolts hit buildings and other locations across Alicante province and cause a fire in Benidorm
CALPE town hall has again appealed to central government to install a footbridge over the busy N-332 and end a historic road safety problem.
Pedestrians arriving by train – both tourists and commuters – and people living on the urbanisations on the slopes of the Oltà mountainside currently have to negotiate fast moving traffic to access the town centre. Preparatory work by the town hall to safeguard vehicle access to the railway station and people’s homes is nearing completion after an investment of more than €100,000.
And now the local authority has again written to minister for transport and mobility José Luis Ábalos to remind Madrid of the ‘dangerous situation’ of people wanting to cross the national highway and highlight the ‘historic need’ for a footbridge to ‘preserve road safety’.
Mayor Ana Sala has requested information about the current state of the project – central government agreed the work as long ago as 2018 – and invited the minister to visit Calpe to ‘learn first-hand’ the potential dangers of crossing the N-332 ‘with no protection’.
She said: “I have expressed our concern to the minister and I have described the ongoing situation we suffer from. I hope he can come and see in person the danger that crossing this road entails – and the urgent need for the footbridge to be built.”
