JÁVEA town hall has put out to tender the contract to install and maintain buoys off the coast which indicate beaches, navigation, mooring and entrances to sea caves – with the environment key to a successful bid.
The contract is offered at nearly €684,000 over four years and the local authority has obtained permission from the provincial coastal service to include steps to protect the coast and its flora and fauna.
This is seen as essential to meet the increase in visitor pressures in certain vulnerable areas and to adapt to a longer season for people using beaches.
And the popular Barraca cove will see a ‘significant increase in protection’.
Boats using the channel between the Portichol island and the mainland will be regulated – as well as being narrow and shallow, it is only 200 metres from the beach and there is also a need to preserve the underwater archaeology of a historic anchorage.
The contract outlines the type of buoys that will run along the entire coast and incorporates moorings for boats in the busy coves of Cala Blanca and Cala Sardinera to prevent vessels anchoring on the seabed, and along the peninsular of the San Antonio cape. Buoys will also mark out sea cave entrances and protect bathing areas of beaches, as well as sites used by divers.
Navigation channels for boats and also other water sports such as canoeing and paddle surfing will also be marked, together with moorings for lifeguard and safety craft, and areas around floating leisure platforms used by bathers.
Some areas such as La Grava beach in the port and the mooring at Cala Blanca and Cala Sardinera will remain all year.
The contract also includes marking some areas from Easter to November and others from May until November.
The company winning the tender will also have to provide a surveillance boat from June 15 to September 15 to ensure the maintenance of the buoys and that people abide by the rules.
