Jams likely until the end of May

- By Samantha Kett

A BOTTLENECK caused by future railway works on a busy Denia street led to huge tailbacks on Tuesday during the school run – and a number of pupils being late for class, since no prior warning had been issued.

The local council assured fraught parents that ‘once the signs and barriers were up’, the diversions would be clearer while the works are ongoing until the end of May.

In the Marina Alta district capital, the terminus of the planned train link from Alicante, the track will spill over onto the street and become a

tramline. Confusingly for English-speakers, the AlicanteMarina train is usually referred to by its acronym, T.R.A.M., and the connection between Denia and the provincial capital is 'line 9' of the Alicante

outer-suburban network.

The Denia-Benidorm stretch has not been running since 2016, when it was shut for repairs and a bus replacement service put on.

Works have been completed on the Avenida Joan FusterCamí Pou de la Muntanya crossroads, and started late on Monday between Calle Metge Manuel Vallalta and Calle Diana, via a new roundabout on the disused railway platform on the Avenida Joan Fuster.

Level crossings have been replaced with traffic-light junctions.

This forms part of the wider T.R.A.M. redevelopment plan, with the first phase – upgrading the stations in Denia, Teulada, Gata de Gorgos and Benidorm, and a complete overhaul of the Denia-Altea line – costing around €6.4 million.
