Six of one and half a dozen of the other
Several bars and restaurants at Gran Alacant urbanisation had reported break-ins
THE GUARDIA Civil have arrested two men in separate operations, each on suspicion of committing six burglaries – in Santa Pola and Benejúzar respectively.
In both cases the thieves principally targeted hostelry establishments, explained a spokesman for the force.
Several bars and restaurants in Gran Alacant urbanisation, Santa Pola, reported break-ins during February and March.
The thief took cash from the tills, gambling machines and charity collection tins, as well as bottles of alcoholic drinks.
The investigation determined that the incidents were happening between 22.00 and 01.00, when the area was quiet after the curfew.
The intruder had got into these ground floor premises by hanging from a ledge of the floor above and forcing or breaking a window.
The evidence led to a 47year-old Spaniard who has previous records for similar incidents, explained the spokesman.
The suspect was tracked down and detained on March 18, and a court in Elche has charged him and released him on bail.
Meanwhile another series of break-ins had been carried out in Almoradí, three of them at hostelry establishments, plus one at a home, another at a warehouse and another at a school.
The thief had forced the front door or a window of the restaurants and stolen the money from the tills, noted the spokesman.
After a few weeks of investigation, officers suspected a 21-year-old Algerian man with numerous previous criminal offences on record.
He was arrested at a home in Benejúzar and has been charged and released by a court in Orihuela.
