Lent sacrifice feeds the hungry

- By Jack Troughton

MEMBERS of the congregation at La Fustera church spread some cheer by taking part in a new challenge that benefitted the Cáritas food bank in Moraira.

People traditionally give up something over the Lent period - the 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday; such as chocolate, smoking, or a favourite tipple.

This year, La Fustera church decided to do something different and introduced ‘Don’t Give Up – Give Away’ to the congregation.

As a result, everyone was encouraged to donate an item of food each day over Lent. Collectively, the campaign resulted in a car load of food, toiletries, and some treats which were taken to Cáritas on Easter Sunday.

John Evans, the Cáritas charity liaison for the initiative, was ‘amazed’ by the generosity and pastor, Father Jim Booker blessed the gift and prayed those receiving the donation would get a sense of love behind it.

Cáritas is supporting 70 families in Moraira struggling to make ends meet, and John explained that was nearly 300 mouths receiving a fortnightly food parcel.

The charity also has collection boxes at the two main Pepe La Sal supermarkets – one on the Moraira to Calpe road and the other on the Moraira to Teulada road. It was hoped members of the public might also want to help Cáritas.

La Fustera church is part of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy and holds a communion service every

Sunday. For details of all the churches run by the chaplaincy along the coast and details of services, visit www.costablanca-anglican chaplaincy.org.
