Comedy theatre for cancer support

- By Samantha Kett

NOW theatres are open again, regional cancer support and research association AMUNT is taging two fun events to help fund its crucial work, both starting at 19.00 at Denia Casa de Cultura.

The first, next Friday (May 7) is a monologue, written by Daniel Monedero and performed by actress and director Eva Díez Guerra – an hilarious take on life for the 'modern woman' which will strike a chord with 50% of the population and create sympathy, smiles and knowing nods from some of the other 50%.

Diario de una Mujer Reunida (diary of a woman who's got her stuff together) is Bridget Jones of any age on stage, but dragged into the current era of Covid, equality, work-life balance and all the other bits that make us question, whatever our gender, whether we've really got the hang of all this 'adulting' business.

The following Friday (May 14), Toma Uno Theatre group will stage a series of highlyamusing one-scene plays under the banner of Locuras de Amor y Otras Dramaturgias (the madness of love and other dramas), directed by a woman who's got her stuff together, Eva Díez.

Tickets cost €3 a head, and 100% of the cash goes to AMUNT.

Both shows are in Spanish, so if you don't speak enough to get the best out of them, you could still buy a ticket for 'row zero' – as in, pay the €3 to support AMUNT but not actually go.

To book either, ring 676 341 429.

What is AMUNT?

Started by four nurses three years ago, AMUNT gets to the bits of cancer help that the public sector doesn't reach. Financial, practical and emotional support are usually crucial after a diagnosis, and although the 'system' will provide the medical treatment, it generally cannot do much of the rest.

AMUNT helps with everything from buying wigs and paying bills through to dogwalking, supermarket shopping and lifts to appointments or anywhere else, and will also let you talk, empathise, and listen, so you feel as though somebody is there for you.

“Their dedication and enthusiasm are inspiring,” says Oliva U3A, which chose AMUNT as one of its sponsored charities from 2020, joining the Gandia Franciscan men's shelter, the Preventorio children's home in Real de Gandia, and the Masai English School in Tanzania.

You can also join AMUNT as a member for just €10 a year – in this time, they would typically help about 75 people with cancer, based upon demand to date.
