CD Montesinos vs Monnegre

- By Terry Harris

THIS was a must win game for Monte, being out of the top seven on points and goal difference. Monte started as they meant to go on by haranguing the Monnegre goalie in the first couple of minutes. Paquito made a lovely run down his left wing, to send a glorious pass into the centre, right in front of Toni, but the keeper got there first. There were immediately three corners, really putting the pressure on. On the third corner on Monte's right wing, the ball was sent backwards instead of centre, and Luis sent the ball towards the goal, whether it was a cross or shot, but the ball flew over the scrambling Monnegre goalie to go into the top left corner, a superb goal.

The 1–0 lead didn't last long, as a ball sent backwards to Andres, who seemed to try a back pass to Tonmi, but made a hash of it, the ball going high and wide in front of a Monnegre player who put it into an open net. 1–1. Adrian was substituted with what looked like a back injury, and replaced by Alfredo. Manu Sanchez had a long run down his left wing and, in front of everyone, could only bestopped by a cheap tackle which only resulted in a yellow card for Monnegre. From another corner on Monte's right, the ball was sent to the centre, for a hopeful lob over the keeper, but too high. Monte were constantly on the attack against, it has to be said, a poor defence. Monnegre seemed to operate a system whereby the whole team chased the ball, often two or three players tackling Monte players, this effectively left the Monte wings clear, and they made the best of it with constant changes of direction. On the cusp of halftime, Manu Sanchez sent the ball to the centre, where Toni scored whilst lying down in the goal mouth scramble. Half-time 2–1 to Monte.

The second half continued in the same fashion as the first finished. Within minutes, an excellent one two from Toni, sent Paquito forward for a simple goal, there being no defence at all. Yet another last man tackle on Paquito, but still only a yellow card. This started a mini brawl between a few players, resulting in a player from each team being booked. Paquito was replaced, what a brilliant player he's been, to be replaced by Maccan. Barroso was substituted by Kevin. Damian passed the ball to Luis who had no problem beating the goallie 4–1. Then to spoil it all, Monnegre somehow managed to score during a goal mouth scramble, two players claiming the goal.

Final result Monte 4 Monnegre 2.

Throughout the game Monnegre were out-played, they only had one corner, and only one other shot at goal. Monte maintained discipline at all times with genuine controlled passes, whereas Monnegre resulted to screaming their heads off at the slightest tackle. At the end of the game, the whole Monte team stood around the manager attempting to discover other results to determine their status. Initially we thought we were 9th, then 8th, then finally we were 7th and in the top 7 to decide promotion.

At least Monte will stay in the division, which was their intention at the start of this disrupted season.
