Costa Blanca News’ weekly feature supporting local writers, in conjunction with Writers' Ink

-

WELCOME to our Writers’ Ink group’s weekly words. We provide news, views, tips and examples of writing by authors and poets, local and beyond.

Founded in 2010 by WordPlay, our purpose is to encourage writers to write and get them published and read. Keep writing!

Warm greetings,

Writers’ Ink has received an unwanted email from a ‘virus denier’ and would like to make it clear that they totally reject it. As I see it… I have never been a neat ‘fit in a box’ type of person and fully believe we should all ask questions and try… and ferret out the truth of everything we can. I am also as fully aware as the next person that governments lie, as do many people when it comes to making a ’fast buck!’

There is a big BUT coming…There are thousands of doctors, scientists and weirdos in the world – which cannot be denied, so it is only natural that some are going to think differently than others. That’s inevitable. But when it comes to ‘conjecture without substance,’ that’s a completely different story. What the woman wrote was downright ridiculous to suggest, and the truth of the matter fully escaped her. Rave over.

I think all writers should try and present what they see as sensible and truthful - to the best of their ability – for unsubstantiated claims can be totally misleading

Fortunately, Writers’ Ink members seem, on the whole, to be coping with the ‘virus storm’ and getting on with their writing. Drummond Marvin has just finished writing a play, which I’m looking forward to reading. He is an excellent wordsmith who has already written several other plays and many short stories, but hasn’t had any plays published, as yet, which is a crying shame. Again, we all know of the fickle nature of agents and publishers! Drummond has had better luck with his short stories, and many have been included in anthologies, to his credit.

Before the above matter arose, I intended to write about names in literature, so – with some room left – here goes. It sounds obvious and odd to suggest that a lord and lady of the realm would be called Kevin and Tracey. They could be Bertram or Cornelius/Felicity or Venetia, but definitely not the former! I recall spending many happy hours in the library looking up derivatives of names years ago as it was great fun, while time gobbling….I wrote a few articles about the subject, and it was fascinating. Americans seem to have the most unusual, as they alter the spelling of many traditional names and concoct some crazy ones too…Mac Aroni was one, Cherry Pie another. What started me off was reading about a Miss Wild Rose who married a man whose surname was Bull! (Honest!) It was also surprising to discover the coincidence of names and vocations…A Miss Raven and a Mrs Rook belonged to a Bird Protection Society in the UK, and a Mr. Heaven was a vicar…In the book I have just finished, I have named a favourite character Aloysuis Asquith, and hope you get to ‘meet’ him one day…

Take good care.

Sincerely Joy Lennick
