Double win for the Barbarians

-

AN action-packed weekend saw both the under 16s and the seniors recording fine wins against tough opposition.

First up was the Babas’ under 16s who travelled to local rivals Inter of Valencia (a combination of three clubs, Alzira, Cullera and Tavernes).

The game was hard-fought and it was evident from the first whistle that the teams meant business, with the players running aggressively and competing hard in every contact situation.

The huge Inter pack were dominant in the first 15 minutes, but the Barbarians line of defence was rock-solid and kept the home team from putting any points on the board.

However, as the game went on the Barbarians started to display their superior phase play and soon put two tries on the board and went into half-time leading 22-0.

The second half was more competitive as Inter brought on a continual flow of fresh new players which helped resist the Barbarians’ onslaught. However the away team ran out comfortable winners 29-0.

It was credit to all the players in providing such an entertaining game and, on balance, it must be said, the Barbarians were just too powerful and skilful in all aspects of the play over the 80 minutes, and thoroughly deserved their victory.

Following on from this superb victory, the seniors took on Tatami on Saturday afternoon, in what turned out to be a hard-fought encounter in which both teams laid everything on the line.

The visitors opened the scoring following some fine support play and went into half-time leading 12-7.

Tatami came out firing in the second half, but, just like their under 16 counterparts, the Barbarian defence was immense and held the home team out for long periods of the game.

As the home team tired, the visitors ran in another try to win 22-7.

Next games will see the mixed 16s at home in Denia on Sunday (March 12) at 11.00, against local rivals La Vila, whilst the seniors play the same day at 14.00, in the quarter-final play-offs against Valencia, with the winners progressing through to the semi-finals to play against Moncada of Valencia.

It promises to be a great day’s rugby, so we look forward to seeing you there.
