A MAN faces charges of manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs after a fatal accident on the AP-7 motorway at Los Alcázares, in which a 69-year-old Frenchwoman died.

According to the Guardia Civil, the suspect was driving a high-end car, which rear-ended the car in front, shunting it off the side of the road through the crash barrier and down an embankment, landing on its roof.

The car which had been hit was driven by a man, who suffered minor injuries.

The Guardia Civil noted that his female passenger died at the scene.

State news agency EFE reported that the victim was French.

The car which hit their vehicle was carrying two men, who also suffered minor injuries.

The driver who allegedly caused the accident, a 38-yearold Colombian citizen resident in Alicante, was breath tested and found to be double the alcohol limit, and positive for cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamines.

His saliva sample has been sent to a laboratory to confirm the results of the provisional roadside drugs test.

EFE reported that the accident occurred on March 13 and that the arrested man has been handed over to a San Javier court.

A Guardia Civil spokesman noted that causing death using a motor vehicle due to serious negligence is punishable with a prison sentence of one to four years and a driving ban

of one to six years.

He reminded that alcohol and drug tests are performed on all drivers who are reported for committing traffic violations, have been involved in an accident or seem to be under the influence.

Members of the public who witness drivers who appear to be under the influence are encouraged to report them to the 112 emergency number, so that police can check that they are fit to drive, he added.
