Images 'declare a rebellion'
THE IB Isabel Bilbao art gallery in Jávea is hosting an exhibition of images by the photographer Félix Grande Bagazgoitia called ‘the magic of water’, which runs until April 22.
As a photographer and biologist, both by vocation and profession, Félix Grande Bagazgoitia ‘deftly moves through nature: the biosphere parks and their inhabitants. Parks that speak, inhabitants that feel.’
However, the photographer's eye and his subject sometimes change from the initial target. In ‘the magic of water’ series, the loss caused by water damage to an entire period of Bagazgoitia’s work, which was printed on slides, acted as a trigger revealing a completely different view of them. Far from being ‘spoiled’, all the images appeared ‘kaleidoscopic, distorted, in agitated movement in front of their creator’. The world of vibrant colour, the one that Felix had captured and composed in his viewfinder had ‘declared a rebellion’. Instead, this world had metamorphosed, giving a new meaning to things. The photographs had already been taken, but the photographer suddenly changed the subject and motive, and perceived a new photographic experience.
IB Isabel Bilbao art gallery can be found at Avenida Ausiàs March, 11.
It is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00-14.00 and 16.30-20.00, and in the morning only on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The exhibition forms part of the fifth Marina Alta festival of Spanish and Ibero-American photography, which goes under the moniker Ojos Rojos 2023 (red eyes 2023).
