LaLiga 1 - Match Day 27

THE TOP three all won their respective matches at the weekend, so there is no change at the head of the league. The top two sides, Barcelona and Real Madrid both had big wins, with Barcelona winning 0-4 away at almost relegated Elche and Real Madrid winning 6-0 at home to Valladolid. Barcelona are top with 71 points and Real Madrid are in second spot with 59 points. Atlético Madrid, in third place, beat another of the top sides (Real Betis) 1-0 at home and have 54 points.

Real Sociedad stay in fourth despite getting beaten 2-0 on their trip to Villarreal. Two defeats and two draws in their last four matches means that there is now a six point gap between them and third place Atlético Madrid. Real Betis also lost and stay in fifth place with 45 points, and although Villarreal remain in sixth position, having won their last two matches, it does mean they close the gap on those sides immediately above them. Villareal now have 44 points after their 2-0 home win against fourth place Real Sociedad.

Athletic Bilbao and Rayo Vallecano are in joint seventh position, after both drawing their matches. Both sides have 37 points and are two points above both Osasuna and Celta Vigo. Osasuna are on a downward spiral as they have only won one of their last five played, whilst Celta Vigo have won three and drawn two of their last five. Both sides have 35 points.

Girona climb above Mallorca after the Catalan club won their match against Espanyol and have now amassed 34 points, one point more (33) than Real Mallorca, who were held to a goalless home draw by Osasuna.

Sevilla got back to winning ways with a 0-2 away victory at Cádiz, and in doing so move up into 13th position with 31 points, one more point (30) than Getafe in 14th after their draw. Cádiz and Valladolid both lost at the weekend but remain in 15th position with 28 points each.

Two draws and two defeats amongst the bottom four clubs means that three of them - Valencia, Espanyol and Almería are all on 27 points, with Elche, on 13 points, stuck at the bottom of the division after their 0-4 defeat against Barcelona. Despite this defeat, it was good to see the Elche supporters being loyal to their team at the end of the game.

LaLiga 2 - Match Day 34

Despite only drawing for the second week running, Eibar stay top of the pile for another week, on 64 points. They are two points ahead of Las Palmas, who climb one place after their first win in five, away at Albacete (1-2). Granada lost away at Sporting Gijón (1-0) and drop one place to third with 61 points after their first defeat in five games. In joint fourth we have two sides who are level on 60 points - Alavés (0-1 winners away at Huesca) and Levante who could only manage a 1-1 home draw against Zaragoza.

There is now an eight point gap between this top group and the chasing pack, with Albacete, after their home defeat (12) by Las Palmas, in sixth place with 52 points. FC Cartagena won for the second time on the spin (1-3 at Leganés) and are in seventh position, one point above Burgos (49 points), who won their home game (2-1) against Racing Santander. These two sides are in a group of clubs who look as if they ‘might’ be safe, but if they have a bad run of results could still get sucked into the relegation battle at the bottom of the table.

Villarreal B are in ninth after their draw in Tenerife (11), with Andorra climbing into 10th place after they defeated Málaga (1-0). They now have 44 points, one more point than Huesca who have 43 points. Two sides are in joint 12th place - Tenerife and Mirandés, who both drew their matches and have 42 points, and are one point above Sporting Gijón and Zaragoza, both on 41 points and in joint 14th position.

Oviedo drew at home to the league leaders (1-1) and went level on points with Leganés who lost for the fifth time on the spin. These two are in joint 16th place and two points above Racing Santander (38 points) who lost for the second week running.

There are no changes in the relegation places this week after none of them could manage a win. Ponferradina are in 19th position with 35 points, Málaga stay in 20th place and were the only one of the bottom four that actually lost their match (1-0 away at Andorra) and remain on 30 points. Ibiza (in 21st place) managed a draw away at Mirandés and have 29 points with CD Lugo (who drew at home against Ponferradina 0-0), still at the foot of the table with 26 points and 13 points outside the first safety place.
