Emotive funeral for Alejandro

- By Jo Pugh

THOUSANDS of people lined the streets of the tiny village of Senija on Tuesday evening, as the funeral of Alejandro took place.

So many people had come to pay their respects, it meant that a large crowd had to stand outside the tiny church.

The hearse, almost overwhelmed with flowers, started its slow journey from the village to the cemetery in Benissa, accompanied by hundreds of cyclists and streams of cars. The cyclists were led by the bright orange colours of Benissa Cycling Club, of whom Alejandro was a popular member.

The procession was almost a kilometre long. As the procession left Senija, the heartbroken villagers spontaneously broke into applause, as they did on its arrival at the cemetery.

The tiny community has been left devastated by the tragic event.
