Volunteers to monitor fire risk zone

-

A group of 13 volunteers from Benissa have begun constant surveillance on the Sierra Bernia, as the risk of fire has started to reach critical levels.

Due to the bowl effect surrounding the mountain, the constant wind has dried out the vegetation so much that is has turned brown on the upper slopes. Only last week, a lightning strike caused a small fire, which was extinguished within minutes.

One of the volunteers had taken immediate action and called the emergency services. The fire plane was scrambled and prevented the blaze spreading after releasing three loads of water.

The group, known as ABAI (Association of Benissa Anti Incendis), have equipped themselves with binoculars, uniforms, and a specialist off-road vehicle at their own expense while they wait for funding from Benissa council.

The heavily forested Sierra Bernia will now be constantly monitored throughout the summer, and if it is successful, it may become a permanent project.
