King Felipe VI made his first special broadcast speech to the nation, apart from the usual Christmas appearance every year, due to the situation in Cataluña. His father, King Juan Carlos, only made three such speeches - to foil the February 23, 1981 coup attempt by Colonel Tejero; to deliver condolences after the March 11, 2004 train bombing in Madrid; and finally in June 2014 to announce his abdication.
