Cath is a prickly Cockney rose
Eliza Doolittle is one of the ‘most wanted’ roles in musical theatre and Cath Reid-Martin has landed the part in Javea Players’ upcoming production of the classic My Fair Lady.
Plucked from selling flowers at Covent Garden by upper-crust Professor Henry Higgins, Cockney sparrow Eliza is put through the mill in a study of how she speaks and at the same time finds herself being pushed up the social ladder.
Cath, who graduated from the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance with a BA (Hons) degree in Acting, spent years working as a professional in theatres around the UK before getting a ‘proper job’.
She now takes on a role made famous on the big screen by Audrey Hepburn opposite Rex Harrison as the academic professor.
And Cath, who moved to Spain three years ago and appeared in the Players’ show Silver Linings, said: “As much as I loved working as an actress, I had to pay the bills, so I moved into a ‘proper job’.
“After a 14-year gap, it’s fantastic to be acting again with Javea Players. Being in a musical is fabulous, as musical theatre is hands down my favourite genre.”
My Fair Lady runs at the Union Musical in Gata de Gorgos from Monday March 25 until Saturday March 30. All shows start at 19.30, apart from a 16.00 matinee on the Saturday.
First night is a gala performance with tickets priced at €20, including cava and a finger buffet afterwards. Remaining show tickets are €16. To book go to www.javeaplayers.com.
