Beach management ‘all at sea’

- By Nuria Pérez nperez@cbnews.es

MEASURES to control the number of people on the beaches in Orihuela Costa are not up and running yet – even though the high summer season started on July 1, opposition political parties Cambiemos Orihuela and CLARO revealed this week.

According to them, the CCTV cameras which were supposed to be checking the entry points are not running and no measures have been launched to force beachgoers to keep social distancing on the sands either.

“Other councils such as Torrevieja or Pilar de la Horadada have divided the beaches into small plots and the number of beachgoers is being properly controlled,” they said.

They also blamed the council for the poor condition some of the beaches, due to the September floods and January’s Storm Gloria.

They highlighted the important role that the beaches in Orihuela Costa play for the local economy, and urged the council to reestablish a specific department for the coast, in order to ‘guarantee proper management’.
