Dénia forest fire

- By Samantha Kett

ONE OF the Marina Alta's first forest fires of summer 2020 broke out near a fast food restaurant in Dénia on Friday lunchtime – but nobody was hurt.

The blaze flared up at about 12.45 in an area of scrubland behind the restaurant's parking area in the rural outskirts of the district capital. The cause has not been established.

Firefighters had to call for back-up from Benissa when the flames started to rage out of control, although at that point it was far enough from any residential areas so the team still had time on their hands.

They at last managed to contain it within the hour, and returned periodically that day to hose down the area in order to prevent a flare-up.

Nobody had to be evacuated, and the only damage was to the undergrowth on the roadside plot where the flames had taken hold.
