Bellreguard and Guardamar de la Safor call off this year's fiestas
By Samantha Kett
TWO more La Safor towns have opted to call off their main fiestas this year in light of the Covid-19 crisis.
Bellreguard normally holds its Moors and Christians at the same time as its patron saint festival, in late
September, but has opted this week to axe them for this year.
“The decision is painful, but considered,” says the council.
“In the current situation, we need to take extreme precautions.”
Depending upon how the pandemic evolves, Bellreguard may or may not hold some sort of low-key events over its usual fiesta days, and assures that the 2021 festivals will come back 'stronger than ever'.
A few kilometres up the road, the coastal town of
Guardamar de la Safor made a near-identical announcement this week.
Mayoress Ana Isabel Ferrer says that 'after meeting with organisers and all participants', it was 'unanimously agreed' to call off the fiestas due to take place between August
10 and 15
“This year, responsibility has to come before anything else, but next year we'll enjoy a fiesta synonymous with massive, fraternal participation, and we're working on 2021 right now,” she said.
