Volunteers wanted
Residents have been asked help clean up the coastline
RESIDENTS of Teulada Moraira have been asked to take up the town hall challenge and help clean up the coastline on Sunday in a ‘ waste removal day’ to improve the image of the area.
It is hoped to recruit a small army of volunteers to clean the main beaches and coves of the municipality after the end of the high season and remove the rubbish left by visitors.
People are asked to gather at Moraira castle at 10.00 for an event aimed to involve all ages – a family fun day that also underscores the need to care for the environment.
It is also planned to educate people about the scale of the problem, with the large
amounts of waste left along the coast.
Councillor for beaches
and the environment Carlos Martínez believes the project will raise awareness and inspire people to be more careful when visiting coastal areas..
He said: “Every piece of waste we pick up and recycle is one less dangerous element for marine life.
“In addition, these cleaning initiatives promote awareness of the real situation in our natural environment and the consequences of not taking care of it; they serve to educate and raising awareness is essential to understanding and action.”
The councillor said the initiative was also part of the United Nations commitment to sustainable development.
This is a core element in the fight against climate change and the defence of natural resources, he explained.
