Jávea’s impressions of Sorolla
HISTORIAN David Gutiérrez Pulido has won the first Jávea research grant to investigate celebrated impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla’s brush strokes with the town.
The € 4,000 award comes from Jávea’s municipal archive in a scheme intended to promote and widen knowledge of its rich heritage and history.
A jury picked the historian’s proposal for the maiden award – his project, called: ‘ Jávea in the life and painting of Joaquín Sorolla’. The artist was a frequent visitor to the municipality. Its coast, residents and visitors inspired a number of his paintings and the project has a special significance as it will be submitted in 2021 – the 125th anniversary of the artist’s first recorded visit to the town.
