Reflecting on architecture
THE EPHEMERAL architectures exhibition has returned to Torrevieja with seven installations that ‘ invite people to reflect on the objectives of sustainable development’.
The pieces will be situated at Calle Joaquín Chapaprieta and Plaza Waldo Calero until October 31.
In addition to getting people to think about the impact of development, the exhibits have also been described as ‘ making Torrevieja town centre more attractive and dynamising its trade’.
Organised by Adriana Figueiras, professor at Alicante university ( UA) and architect, alongside students and graduates, the works aim to promote revitalisation at this important commercial axis and invite the public to engage with each installation from different angles and distances.
The objectives of sustainable development ( SDG – sustainable development goals) address issues of economic growth, social inclusion, gender equality and environmental protection, amongst things, and synthesise the human agenda and social improvement needed by the planet and its inhabitants.
The exhibition’s central installation is entitled Las Alianzas ( the alliance), which is by the event director, Adriana Figueiras and UA graduate architect, Salvador Serrano. The piece is integrated into the fountain that can be found at Plaza Waldo Calero and acts as the start and finish point of a visit to the exhibition.
It is based on SDG goal number 17, which ‘ promotes the search for alliances to achieve objectives. It suggests that all objectives are interconnected and global and local partnerships are necessary to achieve them’.
The remaining installations are: Reflejo ( reflection) by Antonio José Caja and Samuel Sabatell, which uses as its theme ODS goal 1 the eradication of poverty; Alicia en el país de las maravillas ( Alice in wonderother land) by Vero McClain, using ODS goal 5 gender equality; Evolución ( evolution) by Andrea Davó, María Moreno and Francisco José Navarro, using ODS goal 7 affordable and clean energy; Rewall by Raquel Briones and Rosalía Serrano applying ODS goal 9 industry innovation and infrastructure; Imaginando Pieles ( imagining skins) by Mercedes Naranjo and Paula Pastor, using ODSs 11 and 15 sustainable cities and communities, and life on land; and Building Landscapes by Diego Abellán, applying goal 14 life below water.
This is the seventh edition of ‘ ephemeral architectures’ to take place in the province of Alicante.
“Its purpose is to become a vehicle for communication and raising awareness of a subject that is of interest to citizens,” say organisers.
“Through the temporary integration of architecture into buildings and urban elements of the town, it manages to enhance them and take advantage of existing resources, in a sustainable spirit.”
