Denia protesters call for an end to restrictions

DEMONSTRATORS took to the streets of Denia again on Sunday to demand freedom from health restrictions triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The protest came after the regional government announced the easing of measures across the Valencia region. And once again the main slogans were ‘poverty also kills’ and ‘loneliness also kills’, highlighting the effect on people’s mental health.

The peaceful protest was captured on camera by a German film crew in the Marina Alta to film a reality show about people making a new life in the sun but able to focus on current affairs affecting communities across the Costa Blanca and the country.

The protest was organised by Soberania y Salud of Denia and supported by Unidos por la Libertad – or united for freedom.

They do not deny the existence of the virus but stress the cure is worse than the disease and ‘enough is enough’.

Marie Fielding and Zoe Braganza Jones, both British members of united for freedom, made speeches during the demonstration calling for an end to the ‘abuse’ of rights.

And Marie claimed that unless people stopped ‘obeying and conforming’ people would ‘never’ regain personal freedom and rights.

“We have spent a year now living according to this new subnormal,” she stated.

“Poverty also kills. Loneliness also kills. The lack of mental health services is gravely affecting many people but so many today only think about Covid.”

She said people were told to isolate for two weeks even if they had no symptoms.

Marie added: “And then if our loved ones do become ill, we leave them alone to suffer. “It is barbaric. What has happened to humanity to make us think it is the right thing to do.”

And Zoe lamented that ‘poverty also kills – one of our main slogans – and the way we are going, it will increase to extreme levels’.

She also highlighted the ‘profoundly serious issues of mental health deterioration’ and our disappearing ‘freedoms’.
