Calls on the young people of Mallorca to join the 4th edition of
More than 1000 young people have already participated in this Balearic initiative, thus becoming “0 Plastic Warriors”. Kilometres of Plastic for Iris
Kilometres of Plastic for Iris, a Balearic initiative is starting its fourth edition today, inviting students from Secondary, Baccalaureate, Elementary and Intermediate Vocational Training to join the fight against plastic pollution on the islands, thus becoming “0 Plastic Warriors”.
The challenge consists of organising excursions and plastic collection in nature with friends and/or family and sharing ideas in video format on how to reduce plastic pollution on their islands. As a novelty, in this fourth edition of the initiative, promoted in Mallorca by Mallorca Preservation and organised by 0 Plastic, the young people will also weigh and analyse the type of waste found in order to measure the environmental impact of this problem on our islands.
Mallorca Preservation joins Menorca Preservation and IbizaPreservation, members of Conservation Collective, a global network of environmental foundations working for the conservation of nature around the world, to launch this action in tribute to Iris Goldsmith, a young environmental activist and daughter of Ben Goldsmith, co-founder of these entities. The activity aims to involve and give a voice to the new generations to act against plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.
With 15,000 km travelled last year among all the participants who have fought against plastic pollution, this year the challenge is even more ambitious to reach 20,000 km in total.
What's more, as well as covering kilometres, the young people are also invited to form groups of two to create a simple video in which they explain where they have hiked, what types of plastics they have found and what solution they propose to tackle plastic pollution.
The jury, made up of members of the entities involved, will evaluate the audiovisual proposals that present creative solutions based on the so-called 3 R's: reject, reuse and above all reduce, both at a private, public and business level.
More prizes
Another novelty this year is the incorporation of more prizes compared to previous editions, classified in 2 categories: “VIDEOS” and “KILOMETERS”. In the
first category, the winners will be eligible for 18 prizes - consisting of an introductory diving course - for the best 1-minute videos presented at Balearic level, while in the second, the 30 students who cover the most kilometres will win kayak or paddle surf excursions.
“At Mallorca Preservation, we are thrilled to see how young people from all over the islands are joining the fight against plastic pollution. Their energy, commitment and creativity to innovate are fundamental in our quest for positive change. We encourage more young people to join this initiative, not only to protect our environment, but also to be part of an active and conscious community,”
says Ana Riera, director of the Mallorca Preservation Foundation.
For her part, 0 Plastic's co-founder Alba Carbonell insists on the inspirational potential of today's young people: “They have a great ability when it comes to communicating powerful messages through digital content. In this sense, we believe it is important on the one hand to empower and give a voice to those who are more aware of environmental issues, and on the other to demonstrate that there are ways to use social networks for a good cause”.
Registration for the competition is now open on Instagram @kilometrosdeplasticoporiris and interested young people can also find all the information about this call for entries on the www.0plastic.es website in the projects section.
