Union General Secretary, Anton Marcus said that unions had demanded the parliamentary committee consists of members representing both the government and trade unions to ensure an independent investigation was carried out. He also said they were also exploring other forms of legal action to ensure those responsible were brought to justice.

Marcus stated that public seminars in Biyagama, Katunayake and Ratmalana zones as well as in the Port, Electricity and Insurance sector would be conducted to gather more support.

“We will conduct a public campaign on August, 17 (Friday) at several places in Colombo to educate the public about the EPF and also gather support,” he said.

Earlier this year trade unions and Opposition parliamentarians alleged that investments made by the Fund were running at a loss due to corrupt investment..

The Opposition alleged that the authorities had acted against regulations, when they invested in nearly bankrupt companies, losing millions of public funds daily in the process.

The trillion Rupee EPF is the largest public fund, established for the benefit of the private sector employees upon retirement.
