Residents of the area said several business establishments including eight hotels in Monaragala have been closed from yesterday due to the breakdown of the water supply to the area.

They informed that tens of thousands of people living in the Monaragala town and other areas were facing hardship without drinking water. Businessmen said they were compelled to put up shutters after the breakdown of the water supply. However a few hotels that had stored water were open yesterday.

People of the area said they staged a protest on Sunday (12) asking the authorities to provide water service connections to residential houses in the Monaragala town and its environs. They felt that the stoppage of water by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board yesterday was an act of revenge.

However, the divisional manager of the Water Supply and Drainage Board in Monaragala, Prabhath Wijesundara who denied the allegation

said the water supply to the town was interrupted to facilitate repairs to a water service main. “A group of individuals staged a protest on Sunday afternoon in the town. A water supply main pipe at the location of the protest had burst developing a massive water leak. The road should be excavated to effect repairs to the water service main. This resulted in interruptions to the water supply. It was not an act of revenge; I strongly deny that allegation. The water would be restored soon,” he said.
