Will Kapugedera get lucky once more today?

- BY CHANNAKA DE SILVA

Proven failure Chamara Kapugedera is yet again in strong reckoning to make it to the final Sri Lanka squad for the forthcoming ICC World Twenty20, when the national selectors make their announcement today.Kapugedera spotted media limelight in recent times for his repeated failures for a prolonged period of more than six years and the baffling infatuation the national selectors and captain Mahela Jayawardene have shown for him.

However he might yet again get the nod ahead of his closest rival Thilina Kandamby unless the captain and chief selector change their stance today.

Also in the reckoning is the little known schoolboy spinner Akhila Dhananjaya Perera handpicked by skipper Mahela Jayawardene from nowhere for the ICC World T20 preliminary squad of 30.

The little known mystery bowler from Panadura who is said to possess as many as seven varieties has a strong chance of making it into the final 15 ahead of Sachitra Senanayake to provide hosts Sri Lanka an advantage of the surprise element. The Sri Lankan squad is likely to be packed with spinners Rangana Herath (left arm), Ajantha Mendis (right arm) and either Senanayake or Perera (right arm) with all rounders Jeevan Mendis (right arm leg spin), and Tillekeratne Dilshan (right arm) also having obvious dexterity with the ball than part timers.

As the World T20 which begins on Sep- tember 18 is played at the end of the regular Sri Lanka domestic season, wickets are likely to be dead and slow making it almost impossible to bowl in express speeds.

This factor is likely to make the national selectors probably opt for just two pace bowlers, Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara, keeping in mind that all-rounders Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews are equally potent customers with the ball as the full timers. Recovered paceman Shaminda Eranga is thus unlikely to earn a call for the tournament.

Sri Lanka probable final squad for the World T20: Mahela Jayawardene (Captain), Tillekeratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal, Kumar Sangakkara, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis, Sachitra Sananayake/Akila Dhananjaya Perera, Chamara Kapugedera/Tilina Kandamby
