RADIOACTIVE MINERAL FOUND IN KOLONNA

- BY LASANTHA NIROSHANA PERERA

The discovery in Sri Lanka of a radioactive mineral identified as ‘Summers Kite’ has aroused much interest among researchers. This rare mineral was discovered in Kolonna by Gemmologist Researcher Nandana Edirisinghe while being engaged in a research programme. He said he found this Mineral among several Gem stones he had unearthed in the area.

This rare mineral was handed over to the Geology and Mines Department Director General Bernard N. Prem who forwarded it to the US for further examination at which point it was detected to be radioactive.

Research documents reveal that a Russian mines’ scientist, Colonian Summers Kite had discovered this mineral for the first time in Russia in 1847.

Mr. Edirisinghe told a news conference in Ratnapura that the mineral discovered by him had been mentioned in the combined annual report published by theAmerican Gemmology Institution and the Mineralogists Association. On several instances such radioactive minerals are known to have been discovered in the gem mines in Ratnapura, but the miners have been unaware of this rare phenomenon.

This mineral cannot be transported in an airplane or by ship because the radioactive signals could interfere with the security signals transmitted by aircraft or ocean-going vessels.

“Some use this mineral stone as ornaments, paper weights or door stoppers. This can possibly be a reason for the spread of cancer and other serious illnesses resulting from the radioactive properties of these mineral stones. It is therefore necessary to exercise extreme caution in using this mineral for good luck, beauty or to dispel evil forces,” Mr. Edirisinghe said.
