Ven. Sobitha and his vision towards good governance
The concept of a Common Candidate was mooted by Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero, Chairman of the National Movement for a Just Society with an aim to bring opposition political parties, nonpolitical parties and all sections of citizenry together to muster support to nominate a Common Candidate to challenge the incumbent President before January 8, 2015. His mission to abolish the executive presidency was endorsed by opposition political parties and all others yearning for a change of governance with the nomination of the incumbent President to create a Just Society for the purpose of Good Governance. Ven. Sobitha Thero by taking a bold move brought sense and glory to his National Movement for a Just Society, being its Chairman.
His mission has to continue as creating a just society in the present and future is an arduous task. This country has witnessed a 30-year war due to the uprising of a movement claiming social inequalities based on ethnicity. Pacts entered with successive Governments after independence to resolve such inequalities have failed due to narrow political greed. It is timely the prelate must give a thought to bring national reconciliation among all citizens, by first agitating to do away with the ethnic-based identification of citizenry in all government records as there is no necessity to call to declare race or religion for Sri Lankans. As a respected monk, he will be a driving force to unite all dissenting forces to create a Just society for the greater benefit of a united Sri Lanka to prosper through the united efforts of all Sri Lankans.
