Energy Symposium to facilitate exchange of knowledge among policy makers

- BY KAMANTHIWICKRAMASINGHE

The Ministry of Power and Energy, having adopted a policy framework for planning the development of the energy sector of Sri Lanka recently, now envisages organising the scientific knowledge base to implement plans.

An International Symposium will provide the forum for local and invited foreign experts in the field to discuss, debate and share futuristic knowledge relevant to the challenges that the nation is facing in the evolving economy. The strategic plan expects energy for all in an affordable manner with minimum dependence on external sources by 2025.

The objective of the Symposium is to facilitate a rich exchange of knowledge among energy policy makers, researchers, academia, and industry, who seek solutions to problems of energy economy, sustainability of sources, and effectiveness in energy use in the new economy. This would enable the Ministry to formulate programmes and projects on the basis of evidence collected systematically for the effective implementation of its current development plan.

The event will feature an inaugural session followed by technical sessions. Participants will include scientists, academics, engineers, professionals and policy makers in both government and private sector organisations. The Former President of India, Dr.Abdul Kalam will grace the inaugural session as the chief guest and keynote speaker, while the keynote address at the technical sessions will be delivered by Professor Saravanan Muthaiyah, Professor of Information Technology of Multimedia University Malaysia.

The Symposium will be held on June 26-27 (Friday and Saturday) at Hilton, Colombo. The inaugural session will be from 4.00 pm to 8.30 pm on Friday and the technical sessions will be on Saturday from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm.
