Defending champs St. Joseph’s and Mahamaya in the lead

The completion of day one proceeding­s of the 42nd Sri Lanka Schools All Island Age Group Aquatic Championsh­ip at the Sugathadas­a Stadium swimming pool saw defending champions St. Joseph’s Colombo and Mahamaya College Kandy dominate the points table.

The Josephians are in the lead in the boys’ category having secured 142.50 points while Royal College is in second with 118.50 points and Ananda College in third with 81 points.

In the girls’ category Mahamaya College are way ahead at the top with 145 points followed by Musaeus College with 83 points and Ladies College on 71 points.

The two events which were conducted in the Under19 age group in the morning session saw Imani Abayakoon of Mahamaya Kandy and Ranjula Agalawatte of Royal winning their respective events.

Imani came out on top in the 800m freestyle event while Ranjula prevailed in the 1500m of the same discipline while in the junior events swimmers from Lyceum Internatio­nal School had a successful day.

The championsh­ip conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Associatio­n and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd is being contested by nearly 4200 swimmers with over 2500 in the boys’ events and over 1600 in the girls’ events, representi­ng 165 schools across the island from three categories - boys (80), girls (50) and mixed schools (35). The championsh­ip will be continued today.
