Young Members Forum helps teenage mothers and infants

The Young Members Forum of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, in view of the Internatio­nal Youth Day that fell on August 12th, conducted a program at the Sarvodaya Suwasetha Sewa Society in Moratuwa.

The YMF used the occasion to distribute dry rations and other essential items for teenage mothers and infants, that were collected from various orgarnisat­ions i ncluding the staff members of t he Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and also the YMF members. Some of the main contributo­rs to this worthy cause were, Sunshine Health Care (Pvt) Ltd, & Imperial Teas (Pvt) Ltd.

Sarvodaya Suwasetha maintains 8 child developmen­t centres, 1 special Child Developmen­t Centre for teenage mothers, 5 pre-schools, 4 elders homes including 1 home for women with disabiliti­es/special needs.

Ma Sevana provides residentia­l care and protection for teenage mothers who are victims of sexual abuse and have fallen pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Girls as young as 12 years reside in this home. The main aim of the organizati­on is to give these teenage mothers, a family environmen­t, proper education, recognitio­n, required medical care and above all love and kindness, thus helping them to face the future with confidence.

The United Nations’ (UN) Internatio­nal Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing the global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributi­ons to their communitie­s.
