Only 24 prison guards not 45, listed as recipients

Wele Suda’s Easy Cash payments

Out of the 45 prison officers that were named among the 174 recipients of cash under Easy Cash system from Wele Suda, the notorious drug trafficker, in the CID reports submitted to the Colombo Magistrate’s Courts earlier, it is now revealed that only 24 prison guards names are included in the list submitted to the prison authoritie­s by the CID and no high ranking prison officer mentioned therein.

Earlier it was revealed that in the original list of 45 names including those of senior prison officers were included, but however the notable omission of these officers’names in the latest list submitted by the CID had created suspicion, the prison officers stated.

The Commission­er General of Prisons Rohan Pushpakuma­ra had requested from the IGP and the Director of the CID two weeks ago to forward to him the list where charges were levelled against the 45 prison officers, in order to expedite the holding of disciplina­ry inquiries and it is now revealed that a list naming only 24 prison guards had been sent to him in response. It is reliably understood that the Commission­er of Prisons is contemplat­ing taking action against these guards. It is also revealed that this list includes the name of the guards, their mobile telephone numbers, E mail numbers, and the money received in hundred thousand rupees under the Easy Cash system are mentioned.

In the meantime, the Prison officers collective had written a letter to the Minister in charge of Prison Reforms, Thilak Marapana calling for an immediate investigat­ion regarding the deletion of the names of 21 senior prison officers from the original list.
