Discussion successful on Tourism and Energy sector developmen­t

Polish Dy Minister’s visit

Discussion­s between the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva and his Polish counterpar­t Lesek Soczewica, ended on a successful note yesterday evening with greater cooperatio­n assured between the two countries particular­ly on Tourism and Energy sector developmen­t.

The Polish Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Soczewica signed two agreements with Dr. de Silva yesterday at the Foreign Ministry – one on Cooperatio­n in the Field of Tourism while the other was on Avoidance of Double Taxes and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion in relation to income taxes.

Following the agreement signed, Dr. de Silva making a brief statement to the media said his discussion­s with Minister Soczewica which were on a range of topics of mutual interest, ended on a fruitful note. He noted that the possibilit­y of strengthen­ing bilateral relations was discussed, to which included cooperatio­n and developmen­t opportunit­ies in energy and Tourism sectors.

He added Poland also sought the backing of Sri Lanka to be elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2018 – 2019.

Meanwhile, Minister Soczewica who also addressed the media said he was impressed by the new democratic and economic processes in Sri Lanka. He said they wish to widen and deepen their bilateral relations with Sri Lanka while pragmatica­lly improving corporatio­n between the two nations.

The Polish delegation of 20 members led by Minister Soczewica is in Sri Lanka as part of his visit to South Asia that included visits to India as well. He is in the country on a three day visit and arrived in the island on October 5. He has held meetings with the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rishad Bathiudeen as well as with several members of the business community.
