Kaveesha, Kasun steer Dharmasoka MV to victory

Calypso style batting by Kaveesha Kumara and Kasun Maduranga who together put on a quick-fire opening-wicket stand of 128 runs in only 55 balls in Dharmasoka MV Ambalangod­a’s run chase of 191 in 22 overs laid the foundation to record a thrilling eight wicket win over Holy Cross Kalutara in the Under 19 inter-school match concluded at Kalutara yesterday.

The dismissal of Kaveesha saw Kasun along with Sachin Diwangana associatin­g in an unbroken stand of 67 runs helping them to race to the target in just 14.1 overs.

Earlier in the day Holy Cross in reply to the Sokians score of 216 were bowled out for just 76 runs. Holy Cross made to follow on with a deficit of 140 runs posted a formidable score of 330 for 8 declared which in the end proved to be in vain.

FIRST INNINGS WIN FOR ZAHIRA

Zahira College recorded a close first innings win over fancied St. Joseph’s College in the Under 19 match concluded at Maradana yesterday. Zahira resuming on their overnight score of 32 for 2 went on to make a score of 209 in reply to the Josephians score of 203.

ST. SYLVESTER’S ESCAPE DEFEAT

St. Sylvester’s had a narrow escape as they managed to avoid an innings defeat against S. Thomas’ who had to be satisfied with a first innings win in the Under 19 match which ended at Mt Lavinia. The highlight of the second day’s play was a hat-trick achieved by Sachitha Jayatileke who ended with impressive figures of 5 for 19.

Richmond College registered a first innings win against Thurstan College in the match played at Thurstan ground. The second day’s proceeding­s saw Richmond continuing from their overnight score of 194 for 7 making 254 and Thurstan in their turn able to muster a score of 192.
