Lankawalltiles PLC and Lanka Tiles PLC, the pioneers in wall and floor tile manufacturing in Sri Lanka, have been committed to the well-being of the environment in order to preserve its beauty.

In an effort to go beyond its endeavors to not only control and maintain, but also to continually improve the surrounding environment as an on-going process, the company recentlyobtained THEGREENSL® Label (GREENSL STAR) for its full range of wall and floor tiles from the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL) which is the local representative of the World Green Building Council.

The award was presented to the company during the Annual Green Building Conference& Green Building Awards 2015 which saw a wide range of topics being discussed on areas suchas green building practices, sustainable buildings and new technologies that are used to build the sustainable environment. The event saw the participation of over 350 professionals including engineers, architects, government representatives/ policy makers, building owners, building and property developers, suppliers, town planners, associate green professionals, civil, mechanical and electrical consultants, contractors, academics and students.

The ultimate objective of this certification is to identify the overall environmental preference of a product, based on life-cycle considerations and ensure environmental friendliness throughout the lifecycle of the product. The Green Label (GREENSL STAR) given by the GBCSL ensuresthe use of proper products/materials with green features in the construction industry, in order to promote the local manufacturing of green products/materials, to build increased awareness on the benefits of green products/ materials and to encourage the governmental authorities to grant concessions to green product manufacturers and importers. The main goal of awardinggreensl STAR Label is to promote the standards of local strategies of a greener sustainable environment with international recognition, while the conventional goal is to ensure that the products/materials have a minimal detrimental impact to the environment compared to other products serving the same function. Using a GREENSL STAR labeled product, constructors/builders will gain the competitive advantage of scoring higher marks when obtaining GREENSLRATING for their buildings.

“As one of the first manufacturers to obtain the GREENSL STAR certification, it is indeed a great privilege to have been honoured in this regard. By adopting this certification in our products, we are positive that we will be able to assist Sri Lanka to adopt a sustainable practice of using materials or products based on the environmental consequences of their raw material acquisition, manufacturing, product usage and disposal,” said Mahendra Jayasekera, Managing Director of Lanka Walltiles PLC and Lanka Tiles PLC.

The GREENSL STAR Labeling Systemis well recognized locally through the endorsement of the Central Environment Authority and globally through the GBCSL membership of the World Green Building Council (WGBC) which is the network of national green building councils in more than 120 countries, making it the world’s largest international organization influencing green building sustainability, with the mission to strengthen green building councils in member countries by championing their leadership and connecting them to a network of knowledge, inspiration and practical support.
