Gateway swimmers establish 8 new meet records and win 4 age group c’ships

The swimmers of Gateway College achieved great success at the recently concluded Internatio­nal Schools Swimming Championsh­ip held at the Sugathadas­a Swimming Pool Complex. Gateway swimmers establishe­d eight new meet records and won four age group championsh­ips.

The Swimming Championsh­ips organised by the Asian Internatio­nal School saw the participat­ion of twenty one reputed Internatio­nal Schools from across the Country. The top swimmers for Gateway were Pesath Wijesundar­a who was the Under 10 Boys Champion, Araliya Gunasekara who was the Under 14 Girls Champion (with 1 new meet record), Hiruni De Soyza and Sharon Perera who were the Over 16 Girls Joint Champions. Alvin Arulmaran and Stephan Perera excelled by establishi­ng 2 new meet records each while Vihanga Perera and Rukshala Wijesingha establishe­d one new meet record each. Vinuka Fernando, Amrith Perera and Kavindi Sumathirat­ne were also among the gold medalists. Gateway finally ended up as runners up with a total score of 974 points raising their standard further this year. Several Gateway swimmers performed exceptiona­lly well over the year in many national level meets. Among them, Stephan Perera has been a key achiever. He won five gold medals in the Junior National Short Course championsh­ip, three golds at the Senior & Junior National Long Course championsh­ip 2015 and a gold in the National School Games 2015. At the Junior National Short Course championsh­ip 2015, Vihanga Perera and Stephan Perera won a gold medal each. At the National Age group championsh­ip 2015, Stephan Perera (2 golds), Alvin Arulmaran (2 golds), Sharon Perera (1 gold) and Araliya Gunasekara (1 gold) performed creditably. At the Penthathlo­n Swimming championsh­ip, Stephan Perera and Alvin Arulmaran won a gold medal each.
