National Chamber organises session with Egyptian Ambassador

Egyptian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mahmoud Hisham Assran will be the special guest speaker at a session on ‘Bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and Egypt’ organised by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka, on Thursday, February 25, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the chamber auditorium, No: 450 D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha, Colombo 10.

He will be accompanied by Deputy Head of Mission Reham Samir Mahmoud Alfeqi. At the session, the participants will get an opportunity to interact with the Egyptian Ambassador and the officials of the Embassy of Egypt on trade-related matters.

Egypt and Sri Lanka first established diplomatic relations in 1957 and the Egyptian Embassy in Colombo was the first Arab embassy to be opened in Sri Lanka.

Egypt is a country with the oldest civilization with known for pyramids, pharaohs, Sphinx, monuments of which still stand along the longest river –Nile, the only river that cut across a country, creating a civilization along its course.

Egypt today boasts of modern skyscrapers, highways, hotels, tourists and high-tech, in the backdrop of the ancient pharaoic ruins, historic monuments, and Egyptian mummies of a bygone era still seen today by a visitor. Egypt is progressing rapidly with its economy being one of the largest and most diversified in the Middle East, in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, construction IT, engineering and financial services. Egypt has a population of around 92 million. The capital city is Cairo.

The main Sri Lankan exports to Egypt are coconuts, tea, woven fabrics and rubber and rubber products. The main Egyptian imports to Sri Lanka are appliances, machines, chemicals, plastics, etc.
