Abrupt programme inconvenie­nces organizers, players and spectators

Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya lasses from Kurunegala dominated the proceeding­s of the 25th Milo All Island Schools Netball Championsh­ip which is in progress now at the Uyanwatte Stadium in Matara.

They succeeded to qualify for the quarter finals of the three age groups under 14, 16 and 18 with wins over Prajapathi Gothami BV, Holy Family Convent Marawila and Holy Cross Gampaha respective­ly.

Eight-time champions in a row, Holy Family Convent Kurunegala who are also the defending champions, succeeded to book berths in the quarter finals in the under 14 and 16 age groups and look set for another quarter final slot in the under-18 category when they clash in a pre-quarter final against Sumana BV Ratnapura today in the morning.

The championsh­ip underwent an unwanted delay due to an abrupt programme being conducted out of the schedule, inconvenie­ncing players and those present at the venue and as a result of such haphazard act by sports authoritie­s, the organizers were unable to complete yesterday’s matches on time.

The quarter finals of the three age groups are scheduled to be played from 8.00 a.m. onwards which will be followed by the semi finals and the finals scheduled to be played from 2.30 p.m. onwards.

Meanwhile the finals of the Division ‘B’ category was completed, which ended with Sirimalwat­te MV Thundepana overcoming Bandarapol­a MV Matale to emerge U14 champions.

In the U16 category Bandarapol­a MV Matale beat Devi BV Dompe to clinch the

title while Ranjan Wijeratne MV Buttala took the U18 title when they got the better of Ananda MMV Walhaputen­na. Results: Division ‘A’ - Pre-quarter Finals:

Holy Family Convent Kalutara beat Homagama BV 24/10. Maliyadeva BV beat Holy Family Convent Marawila 17/09. Mahanama MV Kegalle beat Ave Maria Convent Negombo 15/08.
