The CEO of South Asia Institute of Technology and Medicine, Dr. Sameera Senaratne allegedly staged the shooting which took place in Malabe to falsely portray as if his life was in danger, the Police said yesterday.

Investigat­ors alleged that Dr. Senaratne together with a close friend, a member of the Kotikawatt­e Mulleriyaw­a Pradeshiya Sabha, and a driver of the Pradeshiya Sabha, who is believed to have provided the weapon, had planned and executed the shooting.

They said that they believed the pair carried the shooting in early February. The Police are searching for suspects who had fled the area.

Meanwhile, the Police on Monday arrested a resident of Embilipiti­ya in connection with the incident.

The suspect had a 9mm pistol, a 3.8 revolver and a motorcycle, which Police believe was used in the shooting incident. The Police said the suspect had tried to surrender to the Police on a previous occasion for the crime.

Investigat­ions revealed that he had allegedly been paid by the PS member to take the fall for the shooting.

The suspect was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was remanded till March 13.

Police also questioned a former Army Special Force Soldier, who was in remand custody on other charges, regarding the incident.

Dr. Sameera Senaratne was also questioned at length regarding the incident on Monday, the Police said.

The SAITM CEO escaped unhurt on February 6, when two men on a motorcycle wearing full-faced helmets opened fire at his car, driven by him near the SAITM campus in Malabe.

The Organised Crime Preventive Division and the Nugegoda Special Crimes Investigat­ion Division are investigat­ing under instructio­ns of the DIG Priyantha Jayakody and the DIG Nandana Munasinghe.

Dr. Sameera Senaratne was also questioned at length regarding the incident on Monday
