GARBAGE WHOSE IS IT ANYWAY?
Residents of Meetotamulla and Ekala, Ja- Ela come together to fight the garbage menace in both areas
Residents affected by the garbage issue of the Meetotamulla and Ekala, Jaela had come together to fight the menace in both areas, the Movement against the Meetotamulla Garbage Dump said.
Chairman of the Movement Nuwan Bopage said they had received assistance from residents of Ekala for the ongoing case seeking to halt the dumping of garbage in the area. Authorities connected to the issue recently announced that a land in Ekala had been allocated to dump garbage collected in Colombo and its suburbs. The decision resulted in residents taking to the streets in protest in Ekala.
Bopage said that residents of Ekala had supported legal measures already being taken by the Movement.
“When the authorities announced they would dump garbage in Ekala, those residents came forward to protest,” he said.
Dumping of garbage was already a critical issue for the residents of Ekala as it was an issue for residents of Meetotamulla.
Speaking of the ongoing court case, Bopage said that it would be taken up again on July 23, when they hoped they would be given the final ruling. Meanwhile, the Convener of the Movement against Meetotamulla garbage dump Keerthi Ratna Perera said that the residents of Ekala area would provide the documents and details to the block of land chosen by the authorities to relocate the garbage dump.
Even though authorities had stated that they would dump garbage in the land chosen in Ekala, no measures had been taken to enforce it so far,” he said.
