RDS Surf School steals the limelight

3rd Red Bull Levels

The 3rd edition of the Red Bull Levels held at the southern beach of Mirissa recently saw the R.D.S. Surf School steal the limelight when they came out victorious in the grueling events in a gripping finish.

The event participat­ed by 70 teams greeted the competitor­s with an overcast sky, cold rough seas and an excitement that ran through the beach whlist taking the challenge on the toughest obstacles course that tested the teams strength, grit, stamina and team work that included the trademark of Sri Lanka toddy tapping and stilt fishing.

The ultimate winners R.D.S. Surf School stole the show and their journey to finals was challengin­g as the team faced tough competitio­n and ferocious waves but they came on top with an overall explosive display from the whole team.

The four member winning team comprised of three Sri Lankan surfers from Ahangama and a female surfer from Sweden and the captain of the team was ecstatic saying “This was more than a race.the course was tiring and hardcore and tiring and we have never faced anything like this adding that each round required us to restrategi­se and keep focused.

The whole concept including stilt fishing and toddy tapping was beyond what anyone could imagine.you have to experience it first hand and of course will be looking come back next year to have a go at it again. Natalie Jayasuriya who owns the Kama Mirissa where the event was held commented that ‘We are delighted to have been the venue partner for such an unique event which not only brings out the culture of Sri Lanka in a non-traditiona­l format, but Mirissa with its vibrant beach life and love for water sports is an ideal location for events of this nature.

Red Bull Levels is an event designed to cater to anyone and fitness counts a lot and also an event accessible to anyone with a sense of adventure minded. The event this year incorporat­ed two strenuous courses each woth five stilts of varying heights to climb. The champion R.D.S. Surf School with their stand out performanc­e carried away the trophy and a cash award of Rs. 300,000. Team Lono took the second spot and took home Rs. 200,000 while Team Rivers and Mountains followed in third winning Rs. 100,000.
