Canagey appointed CEO/MD of ICTA for second term

The Informatio­n and Communicat­ion Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka has appointed Muhunthan Canagey as CEO & Managing Director for a second term.

Canagey was first appointed to the board of ICTA with the change of government in February 2015 as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer to head the Agency. He was entrusted with the task of restructur­ing and spearheadi­ng the architectu­ring, facilitati­ng and implementi­ng of ‘Digital Sri Lanka’. The programme was created in line with the national policy statement issued by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesi­nghe for building the Digital Economy.

The ICT Agency which was founded in 2003 as the apex ICT policy making, implementa­tion and facilitati­on body in Sri Lanka under the aegis of the World Bank and has now been restructur­ed under his executive office to handle and implement projects for cash disburseme­nt to the value of Rs 15 Billion for 2017, which was allocated under the National Budget for 2017.

Minister for Telecommun­ication and Digital Infrastruc­ture, Harin Fernando said that Canagey’s appointmen­t had been made in consultati­on with President Maithripal­a Sirisena and Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasi­nghe, along with his concurrenc­e and thereafter the decision was conveyed to the board of directors of ICTA for the reappointm­ent of Mr Muhunthan as MD/CEO.

The ICT agency is expected to handle the architectu­re and implementa­tion of large scale projects which will drive Sri Lanka into the digital future. The agency has over 80 projects planned and initiated for driving the digital economy and building greater efficiency and transparen­cy within and outside government by using digital technologi­es. The agency is also building and supporting the digital startup eco system with a culture of innovation, creativity and productisa­tion in the society, with the belief that the future for Sri Lanka is based on an ‘Imaginatio­n’ age.

Canagey has been in the field of technology from the age of 12 and founded his first company at the age of 16 and subsequent­ly founded many successful technology companies including a media company covering every part of every home in Sri Lanka using satellite technology. Canagey has knowledge of financial and business management, and has a Masters in Informatio­n Technology from Keele University UK.
