TNA to support time extension to Sri Lanka
A resolution was passed by the TNA supporting a time extension to Sri Lanka with preconditions to implement the 2015 resolution adopted in Geneva.
A TNA meeting to this effect took place on Saturday in Vavuniya, presided over by TNA Leader R. Sampanthan.
Sri Lanka had requested a two- year time extension from the UNHRC to implement the resolution adopted in 2015.
Some members of the TNA opposed the time extension to Sri Lanka, however the TNA passed a resolution to support a time extension of two years to implement the resolution adopted in 2015. These obligations must be fulfilled The resolution was passed with the support of all the constituent parties of the TNA except the EPRLF at the meeting held in Vavuniya. Parliamentarian Nadesu Sivasakthi stated that the EPRLF did not agree to the above mentioned decisions under strict conditions, under the monitoring of an office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which must be established in Sri Lanka.
It was also said that the UN Human Rights Council must ensure that, in the event that the Sri Lankan government failed to fulfill the above mentioned obligations by way of an appropriate mechanism, victims would receive the intended benefits of the fulfillment of such obligations, by way of international mechanisms
