RAJINIKANTH CANCELS SL VISIT

-

Major parties barring the BJP on Saturday welcomed the cancellation of super star Rajinikanth’s Sri Lankan trip to participate at a function to hand over 150 houses constructed by a private firm for war affected Tamils, according to the Indian media. Though I disagree with the reasons given by VCK Chief Thirumavalavan and MDMK Chief Vaiko, I will not participate in the event..

A report said that MDMK general secretary Vaiko, VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan and Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader T. Velmurugan- welcomed the cancellation, while BJP state president Tamilisai Soundarrajan said the actor should not have cancelled the trip as his visit could have been a consolation to the Lankan Tamils.

Vaiko has told media that he had conveyed his objection to Rajinikanth through telephone as he did not want to politicise it.

The actor was scheduled to visit the island based on wrong information, Vaiko added. It said: “Welcoming the announcement, Thirumavalavan said Tamils all over the world felt that his visit could harm their interests, while Velmurugan thanked Rajini for his decision. AIADMK spokesperson Vaigaiselvan also thanked the actor for understanding the sentiments of Tamil Nadu Tamils, cancelling the visit.”

Rajinikanth has pulled out of the event of handing over the keys of 150 houses to Tamils in Jaffna on April 9.

The houses were built by Gnanam Foundation, which has been named after Lyca Group Chairman Subaskaran Allirajah’s mother, at a cost of about LKR 510 million.

Mr. Rajinikanth said he agreed to visit the island nation since he wanted to see the places where Tamils lived and died for their cause. “Though I disagree with the reasons given by VCK Chief Thirumavalavan and MDMK Chief Vaiko, I will not participate in the event,” Rajinikanth said in a statement.

The leaders of the pro-tamil outfits had cautioned the actor from getting “involved” in the emotive ethnic issue.

Mr. Rajinikanth said he planned to meet Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and urge him to find a lasting solution to the fishermen issue. (Indian media)
