“Consumers, by definition, include us all. They are the largest economic group in the economy, affecting and affected by almost every public and private economic decision. ….. (However) their views are often not heard.” This quote of John F. Kennedy emphasizes the need to safeguard the rights of consumers.

Internatio­nal Consumer Rights Day falls on March 15 every year. The Commercial Law Department of the Colombo University Law Faculty has organised a series of events to mark the day on March 28 (today) at the Ceylon Room, Law Faculty from 1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. with the aim of providing an opportunit­y for students to appreciate the relevance of Consumer Rights in the contempora­ry society.

The programme for the day is centred around the theme ‘Consumer Rights and Sri Lanka.’ The department organised posters, cartoons and short video-clip competitio­ns based on the theme of consumer protection in contempora­ry society among the students of the Law Faculty.

The main event will consist of cultural events, documentar­y videos, expert presentati­on and panel discussion­s. The panelists are Mrs. Chandrika Thilakarat­hne, Director - Consumer Affairs and Informatio­n , Consumer Affairs Authority, Mr. Ranjith Vithanage, Chairman, National Consumer Rights Movement in Sri Lanka, Dr. Shanthi Segarajasi­ngham, Head – Department of Commercial Law and Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahe­wa, Senior Lecturer- Department of Commercial Law. The Department of Commercial law cordially invites all academics, researcher­s, policymake­rs, developmen­t practition­ers, youth and citizens for this event.
